Reading
We are so excited to dive into reading this year! In our classroom, we will be using a mixture of Reader's Workshop and Wilson - Just words
It is my goal to have students develop a love for reading and come to school excited about our read-alouds and independent books.
This month, we will be establishing "what good readers do" in order to understand and relate to a variety of text. Students will look for key points in reading, focusing on character analysis, making connections, and learning to respond to reading in a meaningful way.
Our read aloud this month will be Wonder --- this will be a mentor text to some of our key reading words such as predictions, connections, and learning to respond to reading.
Reading Supplies:
- Independent book, class novel, reading logs, post-it notes, reader's notebook
- Blue/black pens, pencils, erasers
- 1 marble/ composition notebook ( reader's notebook)
- Post-it Notes
- Word Work Related to Vocabulary/Spelling
- Homework=finishing up reader responses if necessary and filling in reading log; 20+ IB pages a day OR SRA comprehension worksheet
During reader's workshop students will be expected to read independently for chunks of time, read aloud with peers, write about their reading, share their thoughts, use stop and jots, and use the reading strategies taught in mini-lessons as application and evidence of comprehension. Along with that, students will decode new words and work on intensive comprehension strategies in small group SRA instruction.
Students will learn to choose a "just right" book that will help strengthen their stamina, fluency, and reading comprehension.
Students are expected to have a novel (their Independent book---IB) with them each day in class.
